US as the classic hollywoodproduction
This is a general discussion with a subjective touch. US and a lot of their values goes often hand in hand with the classical hollywood-production. First of all we should take o closer look to what a ”classical hollywood production” means. I will also describe the opposite way when it comes to making a picture, the narrative non linear form.
A classical hollywood production is based upon the simpliest way when it comes to making a picture. This is a picture that is made just for ONE single thing - earn money. Not to tell a good story, not to describe an important theme, not to explain the human being etc. It is only produced in order to make a lot of money. A classic american thinking. In the classical hollywood production we have a good guy and a bad guy. Or as we say when it comes to film, a protaganist (the good guy) and the antagonist (the bad guy). The good guy is only pure good, is the right stuff and always has right. The bad guy is only bad, has no value at all and often has to be eliminated. There are no diffuses or doubts at all, just pure black and white. The simpliest form of them all. The storytelling is also very straight forward and there is a conflict that has to be solved. The movie often follows a straight line and you dont jump between dream and reality, there are no flashbacks or flashforwards and so on. There is a beginning, a middle and the end. There is of course always a happy ending in a classical hollywood production. It is a straight story. Examples of a classical hollywoodproduction is all of the James Bond movies, Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, Die Hard, Pirates of the Carribean etc.
The non linear narrative form is a little more vague. The main characters does not always have a clear goal in the story. The conflict its not that clear in compare with the classical hollywood movie. There is not just bad guys and a good guy in the narrative form. We also see a higher inluence of flashbacks, flashforwards and dream sequences. The narrative form is more realistisc in compare with the classical hollywood movie. We all know that there is a lot of suffer, poverty, madness, sickness, loneliness in this world. The narrative form often gives a more complex and trustworthy picture of the main character in the movie. The main character can be both good and bad and he does not always knows what he wants. Just like in real life. The narrative filmmaker doesnt make a picture in order to earn money, instead he makes a film because he has something to tell the world. Something has to been made. A work of art. David Lynch and Roman Polanski are two non linear narrative filmmakers who actually made a career in Hollywood (?) Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, The tenant and Repulsion are examples of more complexe narrative films.
If we apply these two forms on USA its pretty easy to decide that US is like the simple classical hollyood production who loves money and power. You dont do anything for anyone less you benefit from it. There are good guys and bad guys. Thats it. On a larger scale US is the good guys (the protaganosists) and the rest of the world is the bad guys (the antagonists). On a smaller scale within the US, the good guys in US is the healthy and strong people. People in the army, police, court and people who has a job for a living in genaral is the good guys. The right stuff you know? It is also good if you are a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and supports the idea of the right to defend yourself.
US has a clear goal just like in the classical hollywood film. They want to rule the world. They want to eliminate people who dont support their values. It aint over til US wins, we can live our dream! The dream is that everything is possible if you just work hard enough.
US, on a larger scale, has had a lot of enemies through the years. In Iraq 2003 they started a war against the terrorism. They simply had to blame someone. The short story is that two planes flew in to the twin towers september 11 2001. They had to blame someone. A simple story with no reflections, doubts, analysis etc at all. A straight story. We have a beginning: september 11, we have a middle: two years of war preperations and the end: kill the bad guys in Iraq. Basta.
On a smaller scale the story is about eliminating the bad guys within US and stand for the right to defend them selves. People in America often thinks that the bad guy is out there somewhere. Murderers, pedophiles, rapists and so on. They dont look at the statistics. Also here the story is straight and simple, just kill the bad guys. The bad guys could be unemployed people, murderers, depressed people, rapists, pedophiles, tired people and sick people of any kind. The good guys are the people in the suburbs, the one who does their duty, support their country and live a healthy life. The one who take care of their gardens instead of taking care of other people. The conlict in the story is that the healthy and good people is supposed to survive at any price. If we have to kill someone in order to maintain security for the good guys we do so. The bad guys is the obstacle for the good guys survival possibillites. The bad guys costs money and resources. If we kill them there will be more money to the good guys. In many states we have the death penalty which is a less expensive and very effective weopon in order to treat the bad guys.
US i the most easiest country to reed and evaluate in the world. But its not very beautiful in my opinion. A state that sees everything in black and white, who are killing the bad guys and let ordinary people starve to death. It's not beautiful at all. Not at all. I guess this is the reason for that american people are constantly scared. When you sin your mind will play you a trick. We are all humans and somewhere deep within americans knows that many things they do and stand for is wrong. You will get a lot of enemies on the road if you will do anything, and I mean anything, in order to acchieve your goals. It aint over til I win! I can live my dream! Both on a larger scale and in a smaller scale. Take for example a business man who are willing to do anything in order to make a lot of money and earn a lot of power. There will be blood on the way. The same with US as a state when it comes to war.
Us is a state of actions. They do things instead of analyse and look back. If you do something bad you are bad. If you do something good you are good. Basta. I dont believe in this. Life is more complex than that. They have to use a more narrative point of view. What can we do in order to prevent raising up bad guys? How can we prevent schoolshootings? Which resources should be implemented and when?
The american dream has amost turned into to an american nightmare. Instead of a feel good movie based on the classic hollywoodproduction the film has turned out to be a narrative nonlinear horrormovie. However, it not a work of art though. Its still follows a straight line, we still have good and bad guys and we still have the goal of freedom. But is there a happy ending? I think its all an illusion, i think its nonlinear, i think its filled with a lot of dreams, i dont think US has a clear goal and i dont think the main character will reach his ambition. Allthough, its not a work of art!
They have to wake up. I dont live in US. I only observe the country from distance. I dont know, maybe its wrong to care about people outside your own family. Feel emphaty, be mad about the unjustices and so on. Maybe its better if we only think about ourself and take care of oneself and the closest ones around. Actually, I think its a good idea if... everyone is healthy. The problem is that not everyone is strong enough, have the right resources and has the right network to do that. Some people is born with a weakness - the ones who cried at kindergarden. Some people will develop mental illness neither they want it or not. Some people will be traumatised by something; a loved one dies in their youth, some was molested in their childhood, some had parents with addiction problems etc. We all have different background, different strenghts, different minds and different perspectives.
More and more people in the US gets unemployed. Some of those people will fall hard. Some will not. Because they have different backgrounds. Many people in the US has a gun in their household. Most of those people will not use that gun. Some will. Because they have different backgrounds.
I saw a documentary about US and unemployment around christmas. I was stunned. Of course it only followed a few families. Most families can deal with unemployment within the family. They have savings, the right network and are healthy people. But not all have savings and the right network around them. Maybe there has been an underlying mental illnes there. During a normal life with work, socialisation and money the mental illness was stabilized. When something happens the mental illness develops. With no money and kids who need to be feeded some will fall hard. Maybe they have a sick kid who needs healthcare. A lack of a good insurance, no network and mental weakness they will fall...
US is still in compare with a classic hollywood-production. Both on a smaller and larger scale. Everything is black or white, american people loves to earn money, either you are good or you are bad. A straight simple story. If you are good you are healthy and secure. If you are bad we give a damn about you or in the worsest case we will kill you. They love to earn money and people who are doing everything to fulfilling the dream and thinks that its not over until they win will crush people on their way. They will get stressed. Those people is not fun to be around. They are egoists. Those people is not fun to be around. Stressed and egoistic people will not care about anyone else but themselves. Those people will never be your friend. So why the lack of emphaty? I guess the average american doesn´t read enough books or watch the right intellectual artistic movies. Reading = understanding = emphaty. Hollywoodfilms = naive thinking and living in the blue.
But the question is, will the classical hollywood production still have a happy ending in the nearby future?
